Orange Street Cats, Inc. is a 501c(3) not-for-profit who is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes to reduce the overpopulation of homeless and unwanted cats in Albany and Greene Counties. We will achieve this by providing education and funding for a low-cost spay/neuter program, which will help reduce both over breeding and the cruelty to animals.
Nothing herein shall authorize this corporation, directly or indirectly, to engage in, or include among its purpose and powers, any of the special purposes and powers reserved to societies for the prevention of cruelty to animals under section 1403(b) of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, or any other statutory provisions granting special purposes or powers to such societies.
In the summer of 2010 a team of volunteers came together to rescue cats from a home marked for demolition. The cats' owner asked for help moving a remaining "handful" of cats after animal control had collected approximately 20 cats, a handful that turned out to be close to 90! A few of the cats were desperately ill; some were helpless newborns and some were creaky seniors; all of them were coping with their terrible living conditions. The group of volunteers--concerned neighbors, and others from all over the greater Capital Region who had heard about the cats' situation--got together to rescue the cats from this home quickly before the city began demolition of the home. Due to the scale of this effort, the team had to place cats in all available locations first, and then focused on getting the rescued cats the medical care and support they needed. One by one, the team began the process of finding new loving homes for each one. Since then, Orange Street Cats has helped nearly all the original rescued cats find new families. We have three original OSC rescued cats, please visit our Adoptable Cats page to see who is still seeking a loving forever home.
After realizing what a group of total strangers could accomplish with hard work and determination, our group of volunteers decided to continue collaborating together, and formalized the group Orange Street Cats. As a team we decided to help avoid a situation like the original rescue effort by providing education and funding for low-cost spay/neuter to owners needing financial assistance in the greater Capital District. Low-cost spay/neuter is the most effective approach to improving the quality of life for cats as well as controlling the number of unwanted cats in our shelters and our streets.
Our primary focus is not to take in more cats; however we understand that due to the nature of our work there will be cats who need our help due to extreme circumstances. For example, like little Tabitha, who won the hearts of people throughout the Capital District with her amazing determination to live. We have kept a small group of foster care providers formed in the beginning, and are in the process of growing this network.
We invite you to join us in the effort to help our rescued cats by opening up your home. Our organization relies entirely on donors' generosity to fund our activities. Please consider a gift to Orange Street Cats...every gift matters and every little bit helps. Or volunteer, by fostering a cat or helping at an event.
